Deserve Better
Sponsor US for Your Holiday Gifts!
Do
you want your holiday gift giving to be about something more important
this year? Sponsor a formerly Chained Dog or Penned Dog, and we
will send you or your loved one a personalized gift letter with
a picture of your sponsored foster dog and his/her story.

•
See last year's fosters with their gifts, so touching! •
Give
a formerly chained or penned foster dog a taste of first-ever Holiday
Cheer! As one of Dogs Deserve Better's most beloved campaigns, the
annual Sponsor a Fostered Dog program
has reached out and touched many a Holiday heart and home.
Just
choose one of our special boys or girls and with your donation or
gift box sent directly to them, you can ensure that one life is
now not only safe from harm, but happy, beloved, and spoiled (as
they deserve to be!). Our goal this year is to provide each
dog in our program with a $100 gift card, in addition to any extra
support needed and your packages. Your sponsor gift may
also provide food, housing and veterinary care for Dogs Deserve
Better foster dogs throughout the U.S. in the upcoming year, and
help teach others about the plight of the chained dogs who are left
to languish in the back yard.
PLEASE
NOTE:**If your gift donation is meant for someone other than you,
please provide the information (name and address of recipient and
name and address of sender) in the Message area when donating. We
will then mail out a special gift letter to the address you provide
featuring your chosen sponsored dog. If you'd like to mail packages
directly to foster parents of a certain dog, please contact Dawn@dogsdeservebetter.org
for the foster parent's address. Also, many of you worry that one
dog will be left out...not to fear, our dogs share with each other!
If mailing packages, you may want to check with Dawn first to make
sure your dog isn't receiving more packages than others, so that
all dogs receive packages in the mail.**
•
Plus, any sponsor donations over $25 will get a FREE 2008 Dogs Deserve
Better Calendar. These calendars are being VERY well-received, make
a great addition to your home or office. (an $11.00 value) •
Buddy,
PA
I'm
Buddy, a 6 month old flat-coated retriever mix,
who, while lucky enough not to be living at the end of a chain,
spent most of my days caged because I was too rambunctious and kept
knocking the little boy over when I tried to play with him. DDB
tried to work with my caretaker, but she wanted to give me up anyway,
so they took me into rescue. As with all the DDB dogs, what I'd
like most is a home for the holidays! I'm told I'm quite an adoptable
little guy, neutered and ready to go to a forever home. I'd also
love a bed to call my own, plus toys, toys, toys and treats, treats,
treats...and a new collar and leash! To find out about adopting
me, visit the adoption page. To mail a package to me, mail it to
P.O. Box 23, Tipton, PA 16684.

Leroy,
PA
I'm
Leroy, an elder American Bulldog/Husky mix who has led a sad life. I spent most of my life on a chain in a yard, alone and forgotten. Then I landed at this shelter, where I have been for two years. Nobody even looks at me when they come to visit. This will be my second Christmas in a cage. On top of that, recent x-rays showed that someone in my life shot me. Don't worry, It does not hurt anymore. Anyway, for this holiday season, I would love a forever home. That is the best gift you could give to me -- but if that is not in the stars, then I would appreciate some pigs ears and a very soft bed for my kennel. To adopt me, please contact Maureen: maureen0789@yahoo.com To mail a package to me, mail it to

Magnum,
PA
I'm
Maggie, this is my second year in the Sponsor a
Dog Program, and I'd like to thank everyone for the yummy treats
from last year! Mom says I'm a special boy, and it would take a
special home for me, which is why I'm still here. I have fears that
make me a little scary to some people, and mom wants me to be safe
and loved, like I am here. Not too many people want dogs like me!
But I'm loads of fun with the ones I love, playing, going for long
walks, snuggling in bed. I always like a new collar and leash (a
very short leash would be good, so I can stay close to mom), a ton
of treats, and a new bed. To adopt me, visit the adoption page,
or to mail me a package, send it to P.O. Box 23, Tipton, PA 16684.

Beau,
OR
Hi,
I'm Beau. I am a 4 yr old APBT. I am the first
chained dog that was rescued here in Oregon. I have been in foster
care for almost 3 yrs and my foster mom says I have come a
long way. I am still looking for my forever home but it would have
to be with someone with pitbull experience and experience in dealing
with issues that I have as a result of my being chained. Mom says
I am 75 lbs of energy in motion. I love patrolling my yard, but
in the evening I like curling up with a challenging chew toy, and
would love a new bed too. Happy Holidays to everyone and a special
thanks to Dogs Deserve Better for giving me the life I deserve.

Lilly,
ME
I'm
Lilly, a beautiful 12-month old Newfie/Border Collie
mix that was rescued from a kill shelter. My former "family"
kept me chained outside 24/7 from the time I was 10 weeks old until
they turned me into the shelter. Despite that, I am said to be charming,
happy-go-lucky and a positive sweetheart of a dog. I am happiest
when I have a stick, rope toy, ball or apple in my mouth. I will
prance around proudly to show you my latest object of affection.
For
the holidays, I would love a Nylabone, Large Rope Toy, and Natural
Bones (that can be filled with peanutbutter). I need durable
toys! To adopt me, e-mail Susanna at ddbmaine@yahoo.com. Send me a holiday care package, to DDB Maine,
63 Hawthorne St, Portland, ME 04103.

Shadow,
BC, Canada
I'm
Shadow, 10 months old and very laid back. I enjoy
walks and outside time, but I'm more then happy to come inside and
spend quiet time with the family. I like toys, but also just like
to watch everyone. I am very calm and great with people of all ages.
Foster mom says I still needs to gain a few pounds but I am in good
condition otherwise, nothing a little more food can't cure. I am
told I'm such a great dog and I would suit a non-experienced dog
home, or an experienced dog home. I'd love a new collar and leash,
as well as toys, treats and more treats, and a bed. To adopt me,
e-mail Marion at mariondogsdeservebetter@yahoo.ca, to mail me a
package, contact Dawn@dogsdeservebetter.org.

Nakita,
PA
I'm
Nakita, and this is my second year in the sponsor program too! I
was found by my foster mom dragging a chain and with an embedded
collar. I'm still looking for a home of my own, but I need a special
home too, one with no other dogs or cats and no kids. I loves to
play, and would love to go for hikes in the woods with you. If you
want to adopt me, please e-mail sdk3nrk@aol.com. To mail a package,
e-mail Dawn@dogsdeservebetter.org for the address. I could use a
new dog bed, new collar and leash, and toys and treats.

Connor,
BC, Canada
I'm
Connor, I used to live, or exist on a 2 ft. chain
until my caretaker gave me up. Now I'm free and I just want to be
with you all the time. Don't you want to cuddle up with such a big
fluffy retriever and get kissed by a newfie? Then I'm your man!
I'd like a new bed, toys, treats, collar and leash for Christmas.
And a new home! To adopt me, e-mail Marion at mariondogsdeservebetter@yahoo.ca.

Cassie,
PA
I'm
Cassie, seeking a new furever home in PA. I was
born while my mom was living on a chain. My mom Nala was in the
program for the past two years...foster mom JUST placed her, and
then two days later I came back; I look just like her! So I get
called Nala a lot, but since that was my mom, I try to be understanding.
I always have a toy in my mouth, so I'd most like some soft squishy
toys like this one you see...he's been washed and washed, and now
the dirt won't come out anymore but I don't want to give him up!
I eat the rubbery toys, and then throw them up, so Kim won't let
me have them. I also love a good soft bed, and a new, pretty collar
and short leash for our daily walks. To adopt me visit the adoption
page, and to send me a package, mail it to P.O. Box 23, Tipton,
PA 16684.

Freckles,
PA
I'm
Freckles, a very sweet husky mix. I'm 8 years old,
spayed and up to date on shots. I can be a little shy at first,
but I come around very quickly. I walk well on a leash, love to
be brushed and of course, get treats. I am good with cats and loves
children, but prefers to be an only dog. Can you find room for me
in your home? I am a very loving dog and just need a home and family
to call my own. If you can't give me a home, I'd love a bed, toys,
treats, and a new collar and leash. To adopt me, contact Kathy at
kslagle11@email.com. To mail me a package, contact Dawn@dogsdeservebetter.org.

Katie,
PA
I'm
Katie, a flat-coated retriever being fostered by
Tammy at the HQ. She told me to tell everyone that I'm the sweetest
thing walking, blush...Kim and Heather agree it's true! I came in
from life in a pen with the worst ear infection they have ever seen.
Both Kim and Heather cried when they saw it! I am still on medicine,
and the vet says she's not sure if my ears will ever be the same
again. The good news is that I can still hear my name being called,
and still frolic and play as much as ever. I love everyone, cats,
dogs, kids, grownups...I'm one of those easy dogs everyone wants
to have! I even do the wiggle jiggle dance, and Tammy and I dance
together when we see each other, it's so silly! To adopt me, visit
the adoption page. To mail me a package, send it to P.O. Box 23,
Tipton, PA 16684.

ALICE,
Illinois
I'm
Alice, a 4 yr old Shep/Collie Mix! This will be
my first holiday OFF THE CHAIN! I was picked up with another dog
at a local drive-in. The AC took us to the pound, but knowing where
we had been chained for years, left a note with the caretakers telling
them their dogs were at the pound. When they didn’t
come to claim us, the AC called Dogs Deserve Better worried that
the dogs would be euthanized. A call to the pound saved me and my
friend just in time. I have been waiting for adoption for a very
long time so of course a home of my own top’s my gift list!

Buster,
PA
I'm
Buster, I weigh 60 lbs. and am fully vetted, housebroken
and crate trained. I'm thrilled to be off the chain and away
from the patch of dirt where I spent most of my life. Now
I spend much of the time running around the yard and playing with
other dogs. I like being brushed, playing with my kong and going
for walks. I can be mischievous at times, foster mom says, but I'm
just making up for those long, lonely days in the past. My
life is just beginning and I'm looking for some kind people to spend
it with. To adopt me, e-mail Kathy at kslagle11@email.com. To mail
me a care package, contact Dawn@dogsdeservebetter.org for my address.
Thank you for caring about me!

Bean
Burrito, IL
I'm
Bean Burrito, and I too am wondering who gave me
that name! I'm a 2 year old Pointer Mix, previously chained dog
who was dumped along with my friend Alice. No one claimed us at
the pound even though the ACO left a card at the caretaker's and
told them that their dogs were at the pound and would be put down
in 3 days if they were not picked up. A call from DDB held us until
they could get there an hour after our euthanasia time. Whew,
talk about a close one! I've been waiting for my forever family
for so long....This is my first Holiday off the chain! I would
be grateful for anything, especially for someone to care. To adopt
me or send me a package, contact: dawn@dogsdeservbetter.org.

Riley,
OH
I'm
Riley, and I guess I'm probably the saddest case
this year, although I feel pretty happy these days! Christy Dotson,
OH DDB rep, says I'm a wonderful dog and if you met me, you would
be so thrilled for all that DDB is doing to help me out. I want
nothing more than to sit between your legs and have you pet me for
as long as you are willing! I had Retina PRA which is a hereditary
disease and I have been 100% blind since about 6 months old. The
truly sad part is that I lived this way chained for the past 4 years,
with no human interaction...how scary and lonely it was for me.
The Ophthalmologist said that removal of the cataracts would not
restore my sight. Further, I had the beginnings to intermediate
stages of Uveitis, Glaucoma and Lens Luxation. My eyes caused me
a great deal of pain. The Ophthalmologist told us that the best
course of action for me was to have my eyes removed and artificial
eyes placed in the eye sockets. The surgery was done 11/14/07
and cost $1750 total plus bloodwork. DDB and some wonderful
people already contributed over $1000, but there is still quite
a lot remaining to be paid. (Please think good thoughts for Riley.
Don't forget, he needs a forever home. This may be tough since he
is blind. He weighs 55 pounds and gets along great with other dogs
and cats. He does not jump on people, instead, he sits. Sitting
for petting is his favorite thing to do. He does not pull on the
leash either, because he cannot see where he is going....so follows
his person or tries to walk right beside them.) Folks interested
in sponsoring or adopting Riley can contact ChristyLDotson@yahoo.com

Misty,
NY
I'm
Misty, a 7 year old lab mix who was chained outside
my entire life. I was finally surrendered to our local humane
society last summer after my family had decided they no longer wanted
me. Foster mom says I'm a WONDERFUL, sweet soul who wants
nothing more than to follow you around and sleep at your feet.
Unfortunately, I am heartworm positive and the vet is concerned
about permanent damage to the heart muscle, so they want to rid
me of this infection as quickly as possible so that no more damage
can occur. For Christmas, I would love to have a new doggie
bed, new toys to play with (especially Kong or Busy Buddy toys,
they are my favorite!) or a donation to help defray the costs of
my veterinary care and heartworm treatments. To adopt me,
contact Caroline at ddb_in_oswego@yahoo.com. To mail me a care package,

Lily,
IL
I'm
Lily, a 1 year old Corgi/Bull Terrier Mix. See
me in the DDB 2008 Calendar! Looking for a little dog to fit into
your family? I'm a little sweetheart full of kisses and cuddles!
Gotta love those ears! Imagine the surprise when a mean
old man adopted me as a pup thinking I was a “vicious pit
bull guard dog”, put me on a log chain and then I didn’t
grow much bigger than I was as a tiny pup! My mouth is no
bigger than your smallest finger! I'm great with children
and other animals, and I am in need of a home where someone will
love me and comfort me. I love toys and treats! Peanut butter
is my all time favorite flavor! To adopt me or mail me a care
package, Contact: dawn@dogsdeservbetter.org.

Rocky,
NY
Hi,
I'm Rocky, I was abandoned by my caretaker and
left chained to my doghouse. I spent 5 long years on that
chain before I was rescued by 2 Dogs Deserve Better reps, Chris
and Penny, in Western New York. This is me in the middle of
my first bath! Fortunately I don't have to spend another cold winter
outside but I was heartworm positive and almost died from the treatment
as I was so loaded with it and had had it for so long. I'm
now living in a foster home with 2 teenagers and a single mom who
are trying to make up for my years of neglect. I'm told I'm
a happy, loveable, bear of a dog who would be happy if he never
went outside again! I could use a bed and some toys.
A new collar would be nice too. I'm an 80 lb Rott/Shep X with
a size of about 22 inches for a collar. To adopt me, e-mail Penny
at jkulig_pgummo@yahoo.com. To mail me a care package, contact Dawn@dogsdeservebetter.org

Doogal,
NY
Meet
Doogal, a 6 month old Golden Retriever who came
to DDB when his caretakers returned him to his breeder for chronically
throwing up his food. The breeder, when unable to “fix”
his problem, put him outside in a pen so that he would not throw
up in her house. Nobody took this poor boy to the vet to figure
out what was really wrong with him! Luckily, the breeder decided
to call DDB because she did not want to “deal” with
his issues. Doogal came to us flea infested and half starving
with a severe bacterial skin infection. He was immediately
taken to the vet and diagnosed with Congenital Megaesophagus, a
chronic disease where Doogal’s esophagus does not move food
down to his stomach like a normal esophagus would. Doogal’s
treatment involves being fed small liquid meals several times a
day in a vertical position (he stands on a chair). After each
meal, he must be held upright for about 20 minutes to allow gravity
to assist in moving his food from his esophagus to his stomach.
For Christmas, what Doogal most needs is donations to help
defray costs of his special diet, his veterinary care, and
also donations toward building supplies for his Bailey Chair (a
device designed for dogs with Megaesophagus that holds them vertically
for meals). For more information about Megaesophagus and Bailey
Chairs, please visit: www.caninemegaesophagus.org. Please
consider sponsoring Doogal, and give him a very merry (and healthy)
Holiday! To send Bailey a care package, contact Dawn@dogsdeservebetter.org.

Kota,
Maine
I'm
Kota, a young Alaskan Malamute mix that was released
in 2006 to Dogs Deserve Better after living for several months outside
on a chain in upstate Maine. When a local Animal Control officer
found me, I was chained to a dog house and being fed white bread
for sustenance. The ACO convinced my caretakers to give me a chance
at a better life, and to release me to Dogs Deserve Better.
I'm told I'm extremely friendly, and I love being the center
of attention. I am currently living with several canine brothers
and sisters, and I love to play! I am eager to please and a total
snuggle bug. I have been through basic obedience training, but could
use a refresher course:) I enjoy running along side my foster
mom while she rides her bike! For the holidays, I would really appreciate
a Firehose toy (durable), Rawhide and perhaps a natural bone. To adopt
me, e-mail Susanna at ddbmaine@yahoo.com. Send me a holiday care package,
to DDB Maine, 63 Hawthorne St, Portland, ME 04103.

Miss
Dear, PA
I'm
Miss Dear, or Miss Deer, depending
on the moment! DDB believes I am a child of a chained or penned
dog, as I'm totally unsocialized with humans from never being around
them, and as such I'm a big scaredy dog. One of the reps pulled
my siblings and I out of a shelter where we were due to be put down
because we were so scared...she couldn't stand to see that happen!
I'm being fostered at the HQ, and have come a long way, but keep
getting rejected by homes because I'm too scared. Luckily, they
love me here and I can stay here until someone who understands comes
along! I'm young, and I'm told I look just like Santa's Little Helper
on the Simpsons. So I have that going for me! I love, love, love
toys, and could use a short leash for our walks, as well as a new
dog bed. I admit I go through them pretty quickly! To adopt me,
visit the adoption page of the site, and to send me a care package,
mail it to Dogs Deserve Better, P.O. Box 23, Tipton, PA 16684.

Mandy,
IL
I'm
Mandy, a 2 year old purebred Black Lab. I was found
chained, pregnant and abandoned by my 'family' when they moved.
When they were tracked down, their answer to the question, “What
do you want us to do with your dog” was… "I don’t
care…take her to the pound I guess…” My foster
family says I'm a love. A ball to chase, a bone to chew, two
feet to lay between at the end of the couch….What can you
give a dog who has nothing? Whatever you want…because
I'm grateful for anything! To adopt me or mail me a care package,
contact Dawn@dogsdeservbetter.org.

Danny,
MN
I'm
Danny, a "short little pain in the butt dog"...I
guess I'm mischievous, so foster mom called me that, but she didn't
mean it! I'm just like a mini lab. I'd been kept caged
almost all the time as a puppy, and a neighbor friend finally intervened.
But my 'family', instead of helping me, threw me in a kill shelter.
My foster mom DDB Rep Emily got me out ... I'm a good little dog,
only 40lbs or so, and finally housebroken now!! I could use
lots of things...toys, treats, a bed, a collar and leash. If you
want to adopt me, please e-mail Emily at pelodadegoma@yahoo.com.

Mona
and Pups, MN
I'm
Mona, recently rescued with my pups... I'm believed
to be a French Bulldog mixed with PitBull, and am only about 35-40lbs.
I was left in a yard when my family moved out. The new renters
fed me, but in that time I got prego...and had pups about 10 weeks
ago. That renter is now moving, and so Emily is going to help
me get homes for my puppies and me. I could use just about
anything you can send me, a bed, toys, treats, a collar and leash.
I have nothing yet! If you want to adopt me, please e-mail Emily
at pelodadegoma@yahoo.com. If you want to mail me a care package,
contact Dawn@dogsdeservebetter.org for the address.

Starbuck,
IL
Starbuck
is a Brittany Spaniel/English Pointer Mix. She has a beautiful
sleek coat, and energy enough for someone who likes to run or go
for long walks. Starbuck, is approx 2 yrs old and would be
the most incredible dog to train to do tricks. She can jump up in
the air and land in your arms on command! She would love a treat,
toy or ball. Starbuck has a heart of gold and love to share…she’s
still looking for her perfect playmate. Your gift will bring
this girl the first happy holiday of her existence. To adopt Starbuck
or send her a care package, e-mail dawn@dogsdeservbetter.org.
