I am an animal control officer for Lafayette, IN as well as a DDB rep. I had many calls on this girl, barking complaints. Her idiot owner tied her to a chain at the very back of their yard. No shelter at all. The owner didn't understand what the big deal was, after all it's a dog! Long story short the owner got put in the hospital and left the dog behind, no one around to take care of it. Animal control was called and my boss and I went to get the dog. We both knew this dog would die at out shelter since she didn't have proper socialization so we agreed that I would take her home. That was over two months ago. She loves me, and does wonderfully with my cats. Some of my dogs seem to have issues with her. I'm still working on that and her socialization before I adopt her out. I have already got her spayed and vaccinated. Her names was Hades, I since changed it to Sadie. She loves being indoors and took well to the crate!! She is barely outside for 2 minutes before she is wanting back in! She is definitely an indoor dog now!! Thank you for all that you do! Monica Alcorn Lafayette, IN

I was able to get the owner to sign him over to me (because I had already neutered him, haha!). I treated him for heartworms and now he's searching for his forever home =)

She is putting on some weight, she was a bit thin from not eating for a long while!

I had to fight back my tears when my newest fosters, Gabby and Pudge, saw their first Christmas indoors. Just prior to I had found homes for seven other puppies and decided to keep three of my previous fosters. I was pretty proud of myself, knowing that every animal I could help during this holiday season that all 10 of the dogs in my house would have been outside in the 18 inches of snow we had just received.

Feeling pretty proud of this accomplishment was small compared to the remarkable gift I received. I had become frustrated by trying to find so many homes, and yet still receiving calls daily to pick up more. But the care and concern of someone entirely unknown to me, reminded me that the phenomenal work done by this organization was not going unrecognized when I received $700 worth of Pet Smart gift cards. To realize the cost of fostering one dog, let alone 7, was often more than most know, especially when you have to plan on these animals becoming part of your permanent pack in the event they do not find homes. I was completely taken aback by this gesture, and this made this the best Christmas for these unforgotten souls.

As if the above weren’t enough, I received a box of Christmas goodies, again from a stranger. The box had puppy teething toys, treats and a blanket from someone in Ohio. The card alone was enough to remind me that I was following the right calling.

I would like to thank everyone that donated to our Sponsor a Foster program and to Dogs Deserve Better, for all of their work, whether fostering their own, finding homes, transporting or fundraising, please remember this: how many were saved during this Christmas season; the season of giving, and giving hope is the best gift of all. Thank you.

Gifts

This year we encouraged more person to person packages—Most if not all of the 31 dogs received packages from you. Every single dog in our program received a pet store gift card for $100 on top of any packages and gifts they've already received. All dogs who requested vet help in the program received it. And another 85 dogs received gift cards! That's right, another 85 dogs!

The sponsored Foster Dogs have a message for you too:

Daisy was the star of our show this year! Many of you wanted to support her, in fact, she brought in over $1700 in sponsorships! She also got boxes of toys and treats and beds and diapers, and had her carts donated by generous supporters...she was one of the main reasons we could help the other dogs with their vet bills, but don't worry, ALL Daisy's needs were taken care of first! Also, the best news of all, is that Daisy is getting a new home as a result of all her fame! For Daisy, we hope this is the start of all the great Christmases to come.

Daisy came to us with nothing and will be going to her new home with everything she needs and more. She had a wonderful Christmas thanks to all the generous people who donated to her. Her wheelchair just arrived this afternoon and we are so excited to take her for her first walk. We had ordered another cart earlier but had to return it because it just wasn't right for her. The cart she has now is a custom order and fits her like a glove. She took off across the carpet as soon as I put her in it. The other dogs and cats had to jump out of her way. She is now spayed and had to have 5 bad teeth removed and the rest cleaned which was paid for by all of your donations. She has beautiful little washable diapers that she wears in the house and an assortment of pretty sweaters, hoodies and even a parka to wear when she's cold. She loves to shake her toys and roll on them.

Daisy and I will never forget the kindness everyone showed to her.
Love, Bobbie, Terry, Daisy and the Pack

tiffany nj

Thanks to YOU and Santa Paws,
Tiffany's surgery will be fully covered!

Dogs Deserve Better received a phone call from a concerned neighbor in Bergen NJ that was taking care of an abandoned, chained Siberian Husky named Tiffany.  Unfortunately, the neighbor was in the process of moving to Arizona and unable to take Tiffany with her. With no place to go, arrangements were made that Tiffany was going to stay in Delaware until she finds her new forever home. On Saturday November 21st, Tiffany arrived in Bear Delaware and is now settling in her new foster home.

During the first week, Tiffany displayed signs of food and possession aggression.  Since this was all fear based, it has dramatically improved and is no longer stressed over food and toys (and socks).   She had her first vet visit a few days ago with the other dogs, which proved to be the best form of support for her.  Tiffany has learned to go up the stairs to "leave it" and to jump in the truck.  Her personality is very sweet, calm, and a mush-burger (very, very, cuddly); however, she doesn’t take to kindly to being startled and reacts in turn.  So far Tiffany has been acclimating at a great pace and I have high hopes for her recovery from what she has endured.  She spends most of her day either playing with my dogs or sleeping by the couch.  Her daily trips to the dog park are helping her to socialize with other dogs and teaching her how to be a dog again.  Tiffany has also been working by sledding and scootering. With time she will lose that chunk and be one hot mama!

A large mass was discovered on the right side on her stomach.  Tiffany was taken to the vet to examine the mass and fluid was withdrawn to determine what it is.  The test results will be available on Wednesday, December 21st. The vet does not believe that the tumor is a fatty cyst. The vet strongly recommends that the mass be removed for further examination which will cost $600.  Tiffany has spent the first five years neglected left outside on the chain.  She deserves a second chance at the life she deserves.

ABUSED GA

Thanks to YOU and Santa Paws, DDB provided $500 to
vet this pitiful Pittie and the two Puppies!

A friend of mine came by today and told me I really needed to go look at this poor dog that was chained to a 4x4. I immediately put my dogs up and headed out to see about him.

When I got there I found this poor pittie on the end of a 3 foot chain! He had no water, no food, not even a bucket or bowl for food and no shelter. Just lying there curled up in a ball. I thought he was dead and although I was in a terrible part of town I went over to him to check and see if he was still alive. I got some food from my jeep and when he stood up he fell back down and could not even eat it. He was that far gone. His two front feet are bent from malnourishment. It was 29 degrees here in Ga. last night! He was seen by my friend a few days ago in the rain there in the same place without shelter and it rained for two days here then. He would not have made it through tonight!

I was so infuriated to see him like this and the owners trailer decorated with Christmas lights while this poor dog lay there freezing without ANY shelter and nothing to eat or drink, with EVERY rib showing and his backbone sticking up that I went to the Police station in town. The officer asked me could he help me and all I could say was "Yea, animal cruelty". He asked me for the address and headed out to the trailer with me trailing him.

The owners wouldn't come to the door when he knocked. I told him the poor dog would not make it out there til nightfall if he did not let me take him. He took a lot of pictures and then he told me to take the dog. Thank God! I told him I wanted to file charges on the owner of the dog and he told me to get a copy of the report tomorrow and proceed with the process.

I took this baby to the vet and on the way saw two pups curled up in ball on the side of Hwy. 56. I turned around and went back for them. They are labs acording to my vet and have some severe mange issues going on. They are only about 8 weeks old and weighed 15 lbs. each so will be big! They look purebred and are chocolate. They are in pitiful shape and were freezing and hungry!

two labs ga

The poor pittie boy weighed only 32 lbs. and was estimated at 2-3 years. His ears obviously had an inexperienced "ear surgeon" crop them when he was small. They took almost the whole ears off. There is little of nothing there. My vet said he should weigh around 55 lbs. and that he has some serious internal parasites. He showed me these through the microscope and that is all I could see was whips, tapes and hooks.

He has him on Liqui-Tunic 4 x a vitimin iron tonic twice daily, wormed him, first Dh2PP and told me his body temperature was sub-normal. His gums were the whitest I have EVER seen and I've seen a lot.

The pups have had their first shots and wormed and are being treated with Promeris and cephelexin for the mange.—Samantha Holton, Girard Lifesaver Rescue

Patchie enjoying his gifts!

patchie

The package included chew toys, treats and a gift card for $25.00 to Petsmart! Patchie loves his squeeky toys and of course his treats and even shared his treats with his foster sisters. Patchie was still wearing a Dollar Store collar, so we decided it was time he get a collar more suitable for his personality. He is now sporting a black leather collar with white leather doggie paws around it! He looks handsome in black and there was even enough money to buy the Petsmart mascot, the famous smiley weener dog! Patchie had quite fun with it! Thank you to Nancy for sponsoring Patchie. He is just a love, and has definately come out of his shell! The sponsor program is not only alot of fun, but it allows us to pamper our fosters just a little more than usual! Thank you Tami for the program and Thank you again Nancy. Enjoy the pics!

Patchie MO 2

Here are pics of Patchie with his second care package from "Maddie" to include a new dog bed! Patchie has been playing, squeeking, treating and tugging all weekend! The Sponsorship Program is incredible and allows all of us as foster parents to give a little extra attention to our fosters who have suffered so terribly at the end of a chain. Patchie is truely Thankful to DDB for stepping up for him and allowing the experience of a warm home, a gentle touch, room service twice a day and the chance to play with other canines, you can see it in his "smile" every day! Thank you Tami, Maddie and all those involved in the Sponsorship Program and the many other programs that allow us to educate and release dogs from chains the entire year.

12/14/2009 10:00 a.m. Animal control received a call about an emaciated dog living on a balcony in an apartment complex, 12/14/2009 11:00 a.m. they seized the dog. 12/14/2009 2:30 p.m. the owner went to AC crying and they gave the dog back to her. 12/14/2009 3:00 p.m. they called to tell us they gave her back regardless of her body condition and the fact she was limping, she had been horrendously kicked down a flight of stairs the same morning they seized her. 12/20/2009 we got them to sign her over to DDB and scheduled a vet appt. for 12/24/2009 X-rays revealed she had a broken femur that was pushed up out of the joint capsule and was sticking up, we scheduled her for surgery. 12/29/2009 surgery revealed the tip of the femur was shattered. The injury was repaired and she was spayed and came home to foster Mom on 12/30/2009. She will require in home therapy for 6 weeks but should be fine.

Ziggy was overjoyed when he received his presents. He is a dog that cannot have enough toys. He particularly likes balls of any size and shape - so Santa Paws gave him many many balls - one that makes a variety of animal noises...Ziggy is not sure whether he wants to play or run away from that particular ball. Ziggy also received a KONG, a rubber bone (which was of interest but not as fun as a ball) and a new dog bed cover (as he destroyed the last one...).

Here are the results of our Petco trip.. It was awesome to be able to get them so many things.. They are so happy.. Mr. Pickles (chi weenie) - He is nervous of the camera and everything else, so I kinda have to force the pictures. He found one favorite toy, and decided to hide in his crate so his foster brother couldn't steal it from him! Abby (rottie mix) - Still not feeling well from being spayed and have conjunctivitis, so she looks pitiful in her pictures, but is laying with some of her toys... BUT believe me, they are in heaven with everything.. Each got a Big bag of food, they love (Blue Buffalo) and a ton of toys and treats! Thank you so much for everything they received this year. They are 2 very happy doggie's. And I am so grateful for everything, it's so amazing!

Meet Brandy, a 9 year old Beagle Mix, and Gordo , a 6 year old Husky Mix, who have both been chained up all their lives. This is sort of their second time to receive gifts this Christmas season but for a chained or previously chained dog, there is no end to spoiling them! :) I actually made contact with their caretakers during our local A Chainge For Christmas Project where we delievered over 107 gifts to chained or penned dogs in Hobbs, NM, as well as a copy of our new city ordinances. Their people decided they would relinquish them to DDB since fixed point chaining in Hobbs is now illegal.

To make a bitter sweet story short, I got the dogs rescued on Monday, January 3 and I had received a Christmas package for Petey who was on the list but had gotten adopted before his package came in the mail. So, I decided I would let Brandy and Gordo open up another present since they have got years of catching up to do.

Gordo thought the squeaky toys were the next best thing to canned dog food and Brandy enjoyed getting hand fed the Canine Carry Out dog treats from my 20 month old daughter who also thought she needed them all. So I just want to say thank you to our sponsor from Aiken, South Carolina for sending out sweet holiday Karma to these dogs in New Mexico this year. You have made their day and days to come when they are playing with those toys and eathing those treats. Dogs Deserve Better, we have made these dogs truly have a HAPPY NEW YEAR and a happy new start at life.

Thank you from Amanda Green (Hobbs, NM DDB rep) and Brandy and Gordo

The giftcard was a blessing. Charlie always has the urge to chew on things, and the gift card allowed me to purchase quality hard to destroy toys for him. I was attempting to get photos of him with his new gifts but he kept running off with them and putting them in his crate and they were not even out of their packaging yet. Once they were out of their package he chewed on them for three hours straight, then he took a short nap and then played with them for another two hours. He continues to chew them every day for hours on end.

To the Angels at DDB,

Hi, my name is Cody. Tammi (Kinman, KY Area Rep), you were the angel that freed me from my chain and took me to the vet to have my wounds taken care of—I will never forget you and the kindness you showed me.

I want to thank DDB for giving me a second chance to find a loving forever home and for sending me a very generous gift card from PetCo. as my Christmas present. I’ve been shopping on-line—what fun!

On behalf of all chained dogs, THANK YOU and all your volunteers for being our voice to tell owners that dogs want to live with their family—loved, warm, and happy INSIDE; it’s cruel to leave us outside. My foster family gave a donation to DDB last night in honor of me, to help other dogs who need to get off the chain; I hope that helps you in your mission. I love living inside with people and other dogs and hope that one day all dogs will be able to do that.

Again, thank you for the work you do and for my Christmas gift.
