Chain Off 2008

Rocky Shepheard, Ohio

Chained in Chicago, 24 Hours, June 27-28

Even though I've been involved in organizing several Chain-Off events, this is the first time I had the opportunity to actually chain myself for 24 hours. Aside from the social interaction, it's quite difficult to spend a mere 24 hours at the end of a chain. You are restricted by the length of chain, and you feel isolated from the rest of the world. Dogs are social animals just as humans are and surely feel the same lonliness and frustration that we do.

There is little escape from the burning sun and definitely not from the heat.

Chained dogs may become terrritorial and aggressive and may harm those who enter their territory. I can only imagine how bad the winters could be. Below zero weather and at the mercy of the one who chained them.

There must be high levels of anticipation on the part of the chained dog.. When will someone bring water or food? When will somone interact with me? Will it be hours, days or more?

I will certainly do it again to help bring about public awareness but it is certainly not a pleasant experience. Chaining is a cruel practice and the laws at the community and state levels will slowly change as our efforts progress till one day the chaining of any animal will be illegal.
